Challenge

Through a property exchange, Sun Microsystems was required to provide the State of California's Agnew's Developmental Center with a new multi-purpose building and five other structures making up the maintenance area, wood shop, automotive shops and field offices of the new campus.

Solution

The general contractor, Rudolph & Sletten, selected W.E. Lyons Construction to provide metal building system expertise. W.E. Lyons and Rudolph & Sletten worked together with the State's appointed architect to create a truly unique campus. The design featured vaulted gable standing seam roof systems, bright color schemes, concealed fastener wall panels and liberal use of storefront glass and Kal-Wall systems. Steel building systems were a natural choice given the buildings' functions. The use of steel in this application provided durability, strength and reduced maintenance costs without sacrificing aesthetics. Designed and built under an aggressive schedule—all six buildings were completed within ten weeks during one of the worst winters in the last fifty years.
