Challenge

Bode Gravel Company’s new facility was to be located on Port
property in an industrial community with poor ground conditions.
Extensive environmental compliance requirements as well as space and height restrictions were specified. Pre-engineered equipment for the Central Mix Plant and Dry Batch Plant were to be incorporated into the design. It was a requirement to increase production and efficiency by 20%. Additionally, Bode Gravel also wanted the facility to enhance the neighboring community, and not look like a typical concrete batch plant.

Solution

The design-build team worked closely with City, Port, and County planning departments to design a unique plant configuration only two-thirds the height of the former. 156 piles were driven to overcome the bay mud ground conditions. State-of-the-art dust
suspension collection equipment and 2002 storm water pollution control were also installed. The plant is partially enclosed for dust control, with leading-edge wheel wash equipment designed to keep surrounding areas cleaner and reduce road maintenance costs. The design team engineered the facility so the pre-purchased plant equipment could be shipped and installed in-place with no additional fabrication requirements. Straight-line plant arrangement allows batch processing to be over 20% faster than the old facility. The building design also incorporated the architectural components of a lighthouse to upgrade the appearance of the neighboring community.
