Challenge

The Hegenberger Gateway project required complete streetscape improvements including removal of existing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks on both sides and the center divide of three-fourths of a mile of Hegenberger Road from Highy 880 to the Airport.
Replacement of storm drain infrastructure, trenching for new
electrical lighting and landscape systems, and relacement of
concrete curbs, gutters, walkways and ADA paths of travel all needed to be completed within a 45 day window to meet the City of Oakland’s pre-determined pavement schedule. The project also included new streetlights, plants, trees, banner structures,
aesthetic and architectural improvements.

Solution

W.E. Lyons provided excellent field coordination among the
various subcontractors, and continual communication with City
personnel and design professionals. We re-evaluated the City’s
logistical schedule and instituted a new schedule to achieve the overall project goals. This included dividing the project into two phases so that the infrastructure could be placed prior to paving, then the aesthetic improvements could be completed after the road work. The result is a beautiful gateway to the airport on Hegenberger Road with upgraded access for the handicapped.

Highlights

  • Fast-track, 45 day turn-around for Phase One
  • Design-bid-build project
