Challenge

The entire project was to be constructed with minimal interruption to Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s in-process experimental projects. The existing facility was a multi-use building consisting of a machine shop, clean room, laboratories, and offices, with 2700 employees working 4 shifts, 24 hours a day.

Solution

Through value engineering of the existing design, W.E. Lyons developed a construction plan to allow employees to remain in their workplaces during rehabilitation of the facilities. To minimize interruption to the client and projects, containments were constructed around the existing facilities, including temporary walls, sound barriers, dust barriers, and temporary
ventilation. Eliminating costly relocation of employees during construction saved the owners approximately $750,000 in additional expenses.
